Rickenbacker International Airport, Runway
Kokosing re-profiled a 6,000 linear-foot portion of existing Runway 5L-23R at the Rickenbacker International Airport. Work consisted of 60,000 square yards (SY) of pavement planing, and replacing it with 15,000 tons of P-401 asphalt wedge, leveling and surface course materials; 86,000 SY of pavement grooving; and runway pavement markings.
The quality of the runway’s uniform pavement and constant cross slope were improved by Kokosing’s milling, paving and survey crews working closely together. More than 3,300 elevation photos/measurements were utilized throughout the three-month project to provide crews with milling and paving information for pavement re-profiling. This information resulted in as much as 9-inches of additional asphalt used at the centerline, and the milling of the runway’s outside edges to provide a constant cross slope. A uniform cross slope was also improved through the use of a Blaw-Knox 220 Paver with a Wedge-Lock 25-foot-fixed screed to reduce longitudinal joints. Federal Aviation Administration P-401 asphalt specifications were followed for compaction, and the project was completed without compaction penalty.
Despite additional change-order work, Kokosing completed the $1.3-million project under budget.
