Holmes County Buggy Trail
Kokosing transformed an abandoned rail line into an 11-mile mixed-use path for recreational and horse buggy use in Holmes County. In modifying the former rail line, Kokosing performed 11 miles of linear grading, added 20,000 tons of aggregate base, 14,000 tons of hot mix asphalt and 43,000 square yards of chip seal. Along with the addition of a 14-foot-by-11-foot box culvert to allow trail users to safely pass under State Route 83, Kokosing modified 11 bridges along the route with decking and railing.
The trail was designed for mixed use and features two side-by-side surfaces. One side is composed of two lifts of hot mix asphalt for walking, bicycling and rollerblading, and the other side features hot mix asphalt and chip seal surface for horseback riding and buggies.
The result of the project provides safer travel conditions for the Amish community and recreational trail users by removing the pedestrian and buggy traffic from S.R. 83.
