Knox County SR 13/95
This project included milling 1.5” of existing asphalt off 4.8 miles of State Route 13 bypassing the Village of Fredericktown and resurfacing with 1.5” of hot mix asphalt. The 18,000 tons of 448 Type 1 PG 70-22M asphalt was produced by Kokosing Materials at their plant in Fredericktown, just ½ mile from the project. The proximity to the plant allowed for very short haul time and therefore a very consistent mix temperature at the paver. The outside lane and shoulder were paved with a Blaw-Knox 220 paver using a 20’ hard screed, and the inside lane and shoulder were paved with a Blaw-Knox 220 paver using a stretch 20 screed typically extended to 16’. The paving crew also planned their work to minimize the number of transverse joints and to provide the best possible transitions at intersections and ramps.
Though this project did not include a smoothness incentive/disincentive, Kokosing tested the smoothness using a high speed profiler and all full segments were in the incentive range, with only one lift of asphalt on a milled surface. Kokosing Materials, Inc. performed all QC/QA testing on this project.
The Quality Control Plan was followed per ODOT Standards. Kokosing Materials also performed a.m. and p.m. aggregate gradation testing on all aggregates and AC extractions were run every third day of the production on the asphalt to ensure a quality asphalt mixture. Supplement 1055 density testing was also performed and Kokosing met or exceeded density requirements each day.
