Licking County USR 40
This 7.89-mile-long, ODOT District 5 project between S.R. 310 in Etna and S.R. 37, called for 180,000 square yards (SY) of pavement planing, as an initial milling depth of 1.5 inches was required. Following 3,700 SY of pavement repair, 14,300 tons of 448 Asphalt Concrete Intermediate Type 2, PG64-28 was applied at a depth of 1.5-inches. The roadway, which is a combination of four-lane divided highway and two-lane rural route, was topped at a 1.5-inch depth with 17,900 tons of 442 Asphalt Concrete Surface, 12.5 mm Type A 446.
Because the roadway varied from 24 feet to 65 feet in width, at intersections and turn lanes, a longitudinal wedge joint between the driving and turning lanes was required. Kokosing personnel developed special equipment and a specific Notch Wedge Joint mold to provide additional pre-compaction over the joint. Coordination by Kokosing’s general and paving superintendents on the project provided quality surface application and finishing.
Kokosing utilized a combination of employee creativeness and know-how, quality products and techniques to successfully complete the $2.4-million rehabilitation and paving of State Route 40 in Licking County.
The combined efforts of Kokosing and Kokosing Materials, Inc. not only resulted in the pavement achieving 80-percent International Roughness Index and nearly 100-percent density incentives, but also an award by the National Asphalt Pavement Association.
