Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
As part of its capital improvements campaign prior to the 2006 racing season, TrueSports, Inc. contacted Kokosing to improve on the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course – which was already referred to as the “country club” of racetracks.
In the design-build project, Kokosing was asked to remove all concrete patchwork that created an inconsistent riding surface on the facility’s 2.25- and 2.4-mile racetracks; resurface the 71,000 square yards (SY) of pavement; remove and replace concrete curbs; and construct two connector roads on the track’s keyhole section.
The fast-track project, which had to be completed during the sports car course’s off-season and around Ohio’s winter season, called for the removal of 3,250 SY of concrete patches and replacement with full-depth asphalt; perform 2,050 cubic yards (CY) of sub-grade undercuts and 3,250 CY of excavation; installation of 1,400 linear feet (LF) of 12-inch storm drain, 3,500 tons of #304 aggregate base, 12,700 tons of 301 base asphalt, 11,00 SY of cement stabilization, 654 tons of 446 IH leveling, 4,400 tons of 9.5 mm Super Pave leveling course and 5,100 tons of 9.5 mm Super Pave surface course; and removal and replacement of 3,500 LF of concrete curb.
Kokosing took on the project because of its design-build format and its self-performing quality. From the vertical integration of its Asphalt Group and Kokosing Materials Inc., we served as the aggregate supplier and produced and blended the heavy PG binders and SBS polymer liquids in-house; Kokosing’s Quality Control Department designed and tested the materials and finished product; and Kokosing’s Equipment Division and skilled workforce supplied the full-width paving, materials transfer and vibratory rollers equipment to lay down the quality pavement.
How did Kokosing do on the project? Six-time AMA Superbike champion Mat Mladin said the finished product is “probably the best surface we go to anywhere as far as being smooth and having decent grip.” With a compliment like that, we’ll take that we did a pretty good job.
