Long Island Submarine Cable Removal & Installation
In one of the more high-profile projects Durocher Marine Division performed a multi-stage project with the New York City skyline and Long Island Sound providing the backdrop.
The $22,799,087.00 project required the removal of 84 miles of oil-filled submarine cable and the installation of three new sub-aqueous cables – each measuring 8.8 inches in diameter and weighing nearly 70 pounds per foot.
The project’s two-part installation entailed the transfer of 36,000 feet of cable from a Norwegian lay ship, floated to Sheffield Island, transported across the island via rollers, then gathered by a Durocher Marine barge and laid across the harbor’s floor. The cable was alternately protected by 12,700 feet of ductile iron cable protectors and buried six feet into the Long Island Sound’s floor.
