Dublin Rd. Water Plant Raw Water Intake Improvements

This nearly $5.2-million project to improve the Dublin Road Water Plant Raw Water Intake and low-head dam system required more than 1,700 linear feet (LF) of sheet pile driving.

Nearly 900 LF of 35-foot-long temporary sheet piling was driven in the Scioto River in construction of two cofferdams, which permitted the rebuilding of the existing low-head dam. This portion of the project called for great care by Kokosing to avoid an existing 16-inch lime sludge line that was critical to the plant’s ongoing operation.

In addition to the temporary piling, Kokosing installed more than 600 LF of permanent sheet piling up- and downstream of the existing dam to provide a structural component of the new dam. The downstream piling later served as formwork for a concrete thrust bridge that braced the new dam against the water pressure. The upstream piling provides protection of the new 16-inch lime sludge line that is now encased in the dam.

For the project’s intake system improvements, Kokosing installed 100 LF of 37-foot-length permanent sheet piling to brace a concrete retaining wall and footer, and 160 LF of 45-foot-long temporary sheet piling to support excavation activities that were required during construction of the concrete retaining wall.
