I-271 Bridge Replacement

The $33-million project involved the removal of I-271’s twin, 1,500-foot-long bridges that span the Cuyahoga River Valley in Summit County and constructing replacement nine-span steel girder bridges. The new bridges, which reach a height of 110-feet above the river, Riverview Road and Valley Railway, are constructed on cast-in-place substructures founded on pilings. More than 14,000 cubic yards of concrete and 37,600 linear feet of piling comprise the bridges’ substructures.

The bridges’ superstructures consists of stay-in-place metal deck forms and a cast-in-place deck, which is supported by 5-million pounds of 6-foot-tall steel-plate girders. While the steel-plate girders were fabricated by our wholly owned subsidiary Wabash Steel, of Vincennes, Ind., Kokosing self-performed the project’s steel erection and construction of the substructure and superstructure.

By re-sequencing and efficiently utilizing a work-ahead method of construction, Kokosing was able to complete the project nearly a year ahead of schedule.
