Alum Creek Water Reclamation Facility

Kokosing was chosen to build the 10 MGD wastewater treatment facility in just 26 months. The plant's unique design included numerous, low "prairie style" structures configured to blend into the natural surroundings of the otherwise residential area. At the same time, the plant's inner workings are a high-tech wonder - a comprehensive operation to be run by just one worker most of the time. The job itself consisted of an Administration Building, an explosion-proof Pre-Treatment Building, a Blower Building, six huge Aeration Tanks, Sludge Storage Tanks/Digesters, four 135-ft diameter Clarifiers, a Post-Treatment Building, Tertiary Filter Building, Maintenance Building, Solid Handling Facility and a Drainage Pump Station. The site also required extensive excavation, asphalt paving and an irrigation system. Unlike typical wastewater treatment plants, this one had the added challenge of being a "good neighbor" to new residents. That meant terraced, earth mounding to partially screen the facility, extensive landscaping, and the installation of powerful, high tech scrubbing systems to minimize unpleasant odors. This project was awarded the 2002 AGC Build America Award.
