Value engineering resulted in the successful on-time and under-budget completion of three projects by Kokosing at the Nottingham Water Treatment Plant. Totaling $60 million in work from May 2001 to April 2006, Kokosing provided the following work:
• Project 1 – Renovation of 18 of the facility’s 24 filters; demolition and replacement of media, underdrain and piping; and the addition of an air scouring system to the backwash procedure. This was done without disruption of ongoing plant procedures. • Project 2 – Installation of seven large chemical storage and feed systems; installation of PVC liners to existing lime bins for conversion to storage tanks for alum/polymer and sodium hypochlorite; installation of chemical systems in the abandoned filter area; construction of a new chemical unloading lane; major renovation of raw and finished water piping; and addition of a rapid mixing facility. • Project 3 – Construction of a residuals facility that included two gravity thickeners, sludge batch and storage tanks and associated pumps, piping and mixers; and replacement of the chain and flight collection system within the four bi-level 450-foot-long sedimentation basins.
