ACPA
Presents Awards for Excellence in Concrete Pavements
Orlando,
Fla. (December 2, 2000) - The American Concrete Pavement Association
announced today the winners of its 11th annual Excellence in
Concrete Pavement Awards.
The awards
presentations, sponsored jointly by the American Concrete Pavement
Association (ACPA) and Concrete Construction magazine, recognized the
achievements of paving contractors, engineers and specifying
agencies/owners whose concrete pavement construction and rehabilitation
projects represent some of the nation's best projects in terms of
efficiency, quality, and smoothness, and reduced costs and road-user
delays.
Kokosing
was the winner in the following award category:
Winner: Municipal Streets & Intersections (greater than
30,000 SY) Award - presented to (contractor) Kokosing Construction
Company, Inc., Columbus, Ohio; (owner) Butler County Transportation
Improvement District, Fairfield, Ohio; and (engineer) KZF, Inc.,
Cincinnati, for the State Route 129 (Butler Country Regional Highway)
project in Hamilton, Ohio.
Because there were no central-mix plants in the area, one of
the most challenging aspects of the project was supplying concrete for the
46,100 square yard, 11-in.-thick reinforced pavement. Moraine Materials
supplied concrete from two separate dry-batch plants, each more than two
hours round-trip from the job site.
To speed
placement, the producer built ramps at the paving site so two mixers could
discharge simultaneously into dump trucks, which then carried concrete and
placed it in front of the paver. This increased production and helped
maintain the truck spacing needed to ensure a steady supply of concrete.
Crews achieved a 1.35 smoothness index on a 2/10
blanking band, with no "must grinds," for the completed
pavement.
