NEWS Kokosing’s I-81 Project to Improve Safety and Capacity in Virginia By mjoseph December 10, 2025 > Kokosing’s I-81 Project to Improve Safety and Capacity in Virginia Kokosing Construction is proud to play a key role in the Interstate 81 Corridor Improvement Plan with our widening project near Staunton, Virginia. This critical upgrade adds a third lane to both northbound and southbound traffic between mile markers 221 and 225, improving safety, capacity, and traffic flow along one of Virginia’s busiest corridors. The project began in early 2024 and is scheduled for completion in May 2027, with a major milestone—the opening of the northbound lane—set for November 2026. The scope includes five bridge widenings, 200,000 cubic yards of earthwork, 3,300 feet of storm drain, box culverts, temporary walls, and new overhead signage. Crews have already moved over 150,000 cubic yards of material, fine-graded 320,000 square yards of median, and constructed most of the new lane using Full Depth Reclamation for a durable subbase. Bridge work is progressing through superstructure rehabilitation, widening, and steel erection, while storm drain installation is nearly complete. As we advance toward final grading and bridge reconstruction, Kokosing remains committed to delivering a safer, more efficient I-81 for Virginia drivers—on time and to the highest standards.
