Kokosing On Track to Modernize D.C.-Area Transit Hub

By

For more than 40 years, New Carrollton Station has served as a vital intermodal hub for the Washington, D.C. region, connecting Amtrak, MARC, Metrorail, and bus services. Today, Kokosing is leading a major modernization effort to enhance passenger experience and integrate high-speed rail service.

The project, expected for completion by the end of 2027, combines two initiatives: Next Generation High-Speed Rail (NGHSR) and State of Good Repair (SOGR). NGHSR includes construction of a new 1,050-foot platform for Track 1, complete with a headhouse featuring escalators and elevators. This platform will serve Amtrak’s ACELA trains, which reach speeds up to 120 mph. Meanwhile, SOGR focuses on rehabilitating the existing platform between Tracks 2 and 3, replacing worn concrete slabs, upgrading lighting, and improving canopy roofing—all while maintaining safe passenger access.

Working within an active rail environment requires precision and coordination. Crews are using specialized rail equipment, including shuttle wagons and Dymax carriers, to transport materials along the tracks. Foundation work involves installing 65 deep caissons and 39 micropiles to support new structures, including the headhouse.

Once complete, New Carrollton Station will offer improved accessibility and high-speed rail service, strengthening the region’s transportation network for decades to come.
