Water Resources GLWA Springwells WTP SEd Basins Sluice Gates, Guides, and Hoists

GLWA selected kokosing as the Design-Builder to provide design and construction for the replacement of eight 9-by 12-foot sluice gates, guides, and hoists deliver the project, Kokosing offered and executed the following innovations:

  • The age of the facility and unknown condition of the concrete basins below-grade were cause for concern for GLWA with respect to equipment loading (e.g., cranes) for installation of the new gates and potential for resultant cracking. Kokosing proposed installing the gates with rigging and smaller equipment, minimizing risk of damage.
  • Through close coordination with plant personnel, Kokosing stages and executed an isolation plan for half of the plant sedimentation basins, where gate replacement was to take place. This plant could then operate at its required capacity during “peak demand season”, as opposed to waiting for and conducting a “low demand season” shut-down. This allowed work to begin ahead of schedule and eliminated a scheduled shutdown altogether, resulting in a schedule savings of 12 months.

Kokosing’s Design-Build team successfully replaced critical mechanical without negatively impacting the existing concretes surfaces by mitigating excessive equipment loading at this 1930s ear water treatment facility, while reducing project timeline.
