Marine Tydings Memorial Bridge Foundation And Subsurface Repairs

KEY CHALLENGES & PROJECT DETAILS

Project required repairs to the underwater foundation of the bridge:

  • Rehabilitation on bridge footings and sub-footings of 10 in-river piers
  • In-river excavation and cofferdam construction
  • Reinforced tremie concrete placement
  • Structural concrete repairs of the pier footings and columns.

CHALLENGES OVERCOME:

  • Remoteness of the site
  • Working in water up to 65 feet deep
  • Crews, equipment and materials transported by boat and barge up to 2 miles from shore
  • Massive fluctuations in river elevation
  • Flooding and hurricane weather conditions
  • Extreme winter weather conditions, with heavy ice packs and high winds
  • Erratic rock elevation
  • Manmade obstructions encountered during excavation
  • Environmental restrictions on work that would disturb the river bottom during the hibernation period of the map turtle
  • Environmental restrictions in place to protect and promote growth of underwater vegetation
