Transportation Cleveland Hopkins Airport Train Tunnel Rehabilitation

Kokosing provided general contracting services to improve the existing RTA train tunnel at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The scope of work included removal of the wood tie rail system and installation of a new drainage system, subgrade, concrete base and LVT rail system. Other improvements included rehabilitation of the signal system, concrete repairs to the tunnel structure, new HVAC house, replacement of two other fan homes and rehabilitation of the pump and pipes into two existing pump stations.

Many measures were taken to ensure that the tunnel, which was taken offline for six months to accommodate the construction, would meet schedule. The crews worked double shifts and weekends over the course of the project and performed concrete work in the winter. Kokosing’s diverse equipment fleet also allowed the right equipment to be onsite to perform the work efficiently.

Additionally, Kokosing has worked to provide cost savings to the Owner. For example, Kokosing Industrial submitted an alternate trench drain that provided the owner with a higher-quality product and a $40,000 savings.

Kokosing achieved the Owner’s goal by engaging local disadvantaged businesses which equated to 20 percent of the overall project.
