Transportation Fall Hill Avenue & Mary Washington Boulevard Extension

KEY CHALLENGES & PROJECT DETAILS

• The Fall Hill corridor connects downtown Fredericksburg with Central Park and carries approximately 17,200 vehicles per day, with that number expecting to double in the next 20 years.
• Widening Fall Hill Avenue from two to four lanes with a raised median and extends Mary Washington Boulevard
• Replaces the bridge over I-95 from two lanes with no shoulders or sidewalks to four lanes with a sidewalk and a shared-use path.
• Sidewalk and path improves pedestrian access between commercial and residential areas, connects to the city trail, and pedestrian access to the hospital.
• The Fall Hill Avenue and Mary Washington Boulevard roundabout will provide a free flow connection for traffic between the intersecting streets, while calming traffic speeds along the corridor.
• New retaining walls will minimize the right-of-way and environmental impacts and are located on Fall Hill Avenue at the Central Park Townhomes, at the Forest Village parking lot and historic gates at the roundabout, and along Mary Washington Boulevard to reduce impacts to the remaining historic Civil War trenches.
• The Heritage Park entrance will be relocated from the bridge to Frederick Place and intersect with Bragg Hill Drive.
• Snowdon Park facilities will be reconstructed and includes a 40-space parking lot, paved basketball court facilities, and a baseball field.
